Four men from Achgarve

Four men from Achgarve

Achgarve, Achagarve, Auchgarve - or in Gaelic An t-Achadh Garbh. Meaning "the rough field", this small, remote crofting hamlet in the parish of Gairloch was significantly touched by the War. In the 1901 Census, brothers Murdo and John McLeod lived at Croft 4, John McKenzie lived at Croft 5, and Angus Macleod at Croft 6. By the 1911 Census, John McLeod was moving on to Canada, but the other three remained in a community of eight Crofts and a population of only 31. By the end of the War, John McKenzie and Angus Macleod had been killed in action, John McLeod had been wounded in action and returned to Canada, and Murdo emigrated to Australia.
