"A TRIBUTE OF HONOUR / TO THE MEN WHO / MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / TO THOSE MEN WHO CAME BACK /, AND TO THE THOSE WHO WORKED AT HOME / TO WIN SAFETY FOR THE EMPIRE / 1914 - 1918 /" This Community attempts to collate and record those, with a known connection to the Borough of Rawtenstall (e.g. birth, relatives, employment, residence), who are NOT YET IDENTIFIED ON ANY KNOWN LOCAL WAR MEMORIAL. As an observation I would offer the size of this community is an indication of the scale of local casualties who were not formally memorialised in stone or paper and whose story never made the local newspapers for whatever reason. For that very reason I would humbly offer it perhaps serves as the most important "Borough of Rawtenstall" IWM Community. Please note: 1. This Community does not include those singularly recorded as enlistments in Rawtenstall with no other known connection. 2. It should be read in conjunction with "Borough of Rawtenstall: Casualties as reported in the Rossendale Free Press (1914 - 1921) - PENDING FULL TRANSCRIPTION" which includes a large percentage of servicemen merely reported as died in the local newspaper who would also fall into this community - if time had been available to add them before the closure of the IWM LIves Project.
