Bedford Modern School had a number of Boarding Houses around Bedford from 1853 onwards. 97 Ashburnham Road had thirteen boarders on the 1911 Census of which at least seven served during the Great War. This group provides an interesting snap shot of those boarding during the early 1900's, with many of the boys being born overseas.
