A number of Old Bedford Modernian's served in the ANZAC, Canadian, Indian and South African Forces during WW1. Headmaster of the day Cecil Kaye is quoted on Speech Day 1905 as saying "... he fancied he saw people present from India, South America and South Africa. They had come to Bedford because in its schools it offered exceptional advantages..."
