"Before Action: William Noel Hodgson and the 9th Devons"

The book of this title by Charlotte Zeepvat - ISBN 1783463759 - tells the story of the poet William Noel Hodgson. After a childhood at vicarages in Thornbury (Glos) and Berwick, he was a King's Scholar at Durham School and won a scholarship to Christ Church Oxford. On the outbreak of war he was commissioned into the 9th (Service) Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment where he won a Military Cross at the Battle of Loos. He was killed at the Somme on 1st July 1916. This community aims to identify all those mentioned in the book which include his cousins, friends from school and university, and officers and men of the Devonshire Regiment.
