Berkhamsted School

Berkhamsted School

Berkhamsted School was founded in 1541. Many old boys from the school served in WW1. The school grew to 500 pupils in 1916. In Nov 1914 the school magazine published the names and their units of 360 Old Boys already then serving. The names and regiments of over 100 Old Boys was published in "OTC in the Great War" listing men who had enlisted after the war but before a date which appears to be April 1st, 1915. 230 names are inscribed on the ten panels of the school war memorial. Names are arranged by the year of death: 1914 (4); 1915 (46); 1916 (67); 1917 (55); 1918 (53); 1919 (4); 1920 (1). From using other lists of Old Boys, such as census records, I have already found war deaths not recorded on the memorial. This community also lists the names of over 130 men mentioned in despatches plus almost 100 who were awarded the Military Cross, including two VCs. Many of these different groupings have individual communities
