HMS Princess Irene: 27 May 1915

Princess Irene was originally intended to be a cruise liner for the Canadian Pacific Railway. However, with the outbreak of war she was requisitioned by the navy and converted to an auxiliary Minelayer. On 27 May she was moored in the Medway Estuary being loaded with mines in preparation for a minelaying operation. Just after 11am, she exploded and disintegrated. A total of 352 people were killed. This community remembers them.
