By 1918 10 curates from Portsea were serving as Temporary Chaplains to the Forces. Many former Portsea clergy also served as TCF, as well as at least two who came to the Parish after the war. The parish had pre-war up to 15 curates at a time serving the parent church St Mary's Portsea and its mission churches. Several of those who served rose to senior positions in the church and at universities. At that time the parish only accepted curates with Oxford or Cambridge degrees; the only exceptions being a small number from far flung parts of the British Empire.
