Sons of William H McCudden and Amelia Byford from Gillingham, Kent. William, James and John joined the Royal Engineers, before serving in the Royal Flying Corps (later Royal Air Force for James, who earned a Victoria Cross). Their younger brother Maurice also later joined the Royal Air Force. Tragically the three elder brothers all died during the war - Maurice lived until 1934.
