HM Yacht ZAIDA
A community to record the crew in August 1916 when the armed yacht Zaida hit a French mine some 3 miles off Ayas whilst on covert operations (dropping off agents, surveying fortifications etc) in the Gulf of Alexandretta. She broke in two and sank quickly and 13 crewmen were killed or drowned. The 19 survivors clung on to the debris of the deckhouse roof until they were picked up by the Syrians who handed them over to the Turkish. Five more of them died in terrible conditions in captivity in Asia Minor. The site of the wreck is known. I believe this is the complete list. I have 32 names of which 18 are on CWGC, the rest survived. (Thanks to Lives volunteers for setting up missing lives) Please let me know of any errors.
