British West Indies Regiment: Explosion of Jericho-Jane dump at Shunet Nimrim, 15 October 1918

This community has been inspired by the story of how two men of the British West Indies Regiment came to be buried in one grave. It is told by Anna Habibti whose book 'A Year on Fire Mountain: An Occupation Diary', published 2014 ISBN: 978-1502822291, provides both the history and a personal contemporary account of the conflict in Palestine. She describes how most of the 2nd Battalion had been sent north, but D Company had been left to guard an enemy ammunition dump at Shunet Nimrin, which exploded while they were either guarding it or clearing it. Three men of the BWIR were killed, Sgt 1619 Edwards LR, Pte 1713 Martin T, Pte 1778 Scott JH, and 5 more injured. A full description is given in each life story. 2/Lieut Allan Owen Bartlett, Army Service Corps, was also killed in this incident; a Board of Inquiry concluded that the dump had been booby-trapped by the retreating Turks.
