This community is for men and women from the South African Forces that survived the war. Unfortunately once they left the forces they tend to drop out of the records and trace is lost. Some went on to serve in the Second World War, and lost their lives there. Realistically these are South Africans who did not feature on the South African Roll of Honour. Chief contributor to this comm is data from the community at: https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/community/8182 The altar frontal was commissioned especially for the national service of thanksgiving at the end of the Great War in July 1919, attended by King George V. Local women throughout the war visited hospitals and convalescent homes to volunteer to teach the men embroidery and other crafts as part of their treatment. 138 men from the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa undergoing treatment at hospitals across England displayed a particular aptitude for the work and contributed small embroidered sections, which were then stitched together at the Royal School of Needlework.
