This was a single-ship action that occurred on 9 November 1914, after the HMAS Sydney, Australian light cruiser, grounded the German light cruiser SMS Emden in the Battle of Cocos on 9 November 1914. The Emden had attacked ships in the Indian Ocean and made a daring raid on Penang, sinking the Russian cruiser the Zhemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet. The crew of the Emden became POWs in Singapore. Some reports say that there was collusion between a few of the Germans and the section of the Indian Light Infantry troops who took part in the February 1915 Singapore Mutiny.
