This came about when looking to better document/curate the "dubious provenance" medal index cards. It seemed peculiar that officers of the US Army Medical Corps were applying for British medals. These men had no entitlement for U.S.A.M.C. service - foreign soldiers had no right to British campaign medals. However, number of physicians from Harvard Medical School served in France in the Harvard Medical Unit prior to America's entry into the war. Some of these were civilians and served as contract surgeons, and others were given Temporary Commissions in the R.A.M.C. notwithstanding their American nationality. There are a number of men who served temporarily in the R.A.M.C. and who subsequently returned to France as commissioned officers in the US Army Medical Corps. The dates these men served is stated on the civilian medical medal roll, reference WO 329/2324. If you are an Ancestry subscriber (I am not), there is a dataset named "U.S., Adjutant General Military Records, 1631-1976" which contains a number of publications. Of particular interest is "HarvardĀ“s Military Record in the World War". I have been able to use this to populate details for several Life Stories, but the majority require biographical details being added. Persons marked as "Doctor" or "Surgeon" require further research.
