People who were born or lived in the small Essex village of Margaret Roding. A window in St. Margarets Church commemorates the men who died serving their Country during The First World War. 'A Community at War' pub Issue One 2015 The Essex Family Historian. An article about some of the men of Margaret Roding and the part they played in the First World War. At a Fete organised in July 1919 to raise funds for the Memorial Window the Rector, Rev C.S. Bassett said "that the losses in the village had unfortunately been heavy compared with the population. No less than eight of the resident men (Edward Perry died 1st July 1921 increasing number to nine) had fallen and counting those whose parents lived in the parish the total was eleven. Hardly a single able-bodied man failed to be attested or to offer to take his part. Besides that, the women folk, mothers, sisters, and sweethearts, had worked together all through the long and weary years." Red Cross - Rev and Mrs Bassett organised work for the Chelmsford War Work depot, no 4717, 8 Crane Court, part time one afternoon a week from 8 March 1917 to 31 Jan 1919. The women were working on 'garments'. The Depot at Crane Court opened 8 Jan 1917 and in its first two months had produced hundreds of items including 125 pyjama suits, 40 nightshirts, 105 pairs of day socks and 91 bags of theatre swabs.
