Lyall Relatives

Lyall Relatives

My Lyall family originated in the North East of Scotland, largely from Angus but extending in to Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire. Our traceable roots go back to the early 1700s, but the stories of these seven men reflect how far and wide the family had spread by the 20th century - Canada, Florida, London, Liverpool and Manchester. Frederick David Lyall was my paternal grandfather, and was only in the Army for a few months because of a serious heart condition brought on by two bouts of Rheumatic Fever. George Lyall McLauchlan was my 1st cousin, related to Frederick and myself through my great grandmother. James Lyall McLauchlan was George's nephew. David Webster Lyall was my 2nd cousin, related to me through my great great grandfather. George Lindsay Lyall was his son. Lindsay Ireland Lyall was my 3rd cousin who evidently valued his Scottish heritage to the point where he joined up with The London Scottish. His father was born in Rothiemay, Banffshire. Dudley Lyall Mammen was also my 3rd cousin, whose mother hailed from the Aberdeen area. As a family their stories reflect war at land and sea, an involvement in iconic battles - at Cambrai, Vimy Ridge, and Jutland - ill health, valour, survival and death. Ursula Butchart (nee Lyall)
