This Community is to group together those who were involved in the accidental death of Martin Scully or Sculley, attached to the 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers on the 17th October 1914, who was involved in the escorting of the soldier Private Samuel Knowles, Royal Lancaster Regiment who was bound for prison. The group was being led by Sergeant Markey, who asked some local Service Corps Soldiers who were near the local train station the way to the prison. They offered to take the Prisoner Escort Party to the prison with Private Scully in the back of the vehicle with the prisoner and others in the party, when they were warned to "Hang on" as the vehicle started it's journey but Private Sculley fell off and was run over by the rear wheels of an overtaking lorry and Scully received extensive injuries. Despite quick surgery, Scully died of Heart Failure from his injuries. The statements from the Board of Enquiry can be found in his Service Record. The Board found that no one was responsible for the fatality. Editors Note - The CWGC has his date of death as the 18th October 1914, however the statements give conclusive evidence that he died at 5pm on the 17th October 1914.
