Paddock / Parrock from Shropshire & North Wales
Bearers of the surnames Paddock and Parrock born, or with family origins, in Denbighshire, Flintshire, Montgomeryshire and Shropshire. Paddock is a variant form of Parrock in the ‘surname neighbourhood’ of Shropshire and N. Wales, which first emerged in the second quarter of the 17th century and over time became the predominant spelling. The change in spelling was not always linear in development and sometimes reverted to the original form. By way of example, Cpl Thomas Richard Paddock (#42994) had first cousins with the same surname (including Pte William Paddock (#26569) who was KIA in 1917), and first cousins once removed who went by the surname spelling Parrock. Parrock is a toponymic family name in the area, first recorded in the early 14th century as a byname based on a location in the manor of Stoke upon Tern in N.E. Shropshire (eg ‘de Parrocks’ and ‘de Parrok’). Note: There will be more members of this community who cannot be identified, primarily because so many WW1 British Army service records were destroyed during a German bombing raid in WW2.
