186 TOTAL // January (14) February (11) March (32) April (14) May (8) June (8) July (23) August (14) September (16) October (19) November (16) December (11) // Includes Deaths at sea (20) // The largest number died at hospitals in Alexandria, Egypt (60) and Seaford, Sussex (10) Plymouth, Devon (23) Men of the 1st and 2nd Battalions who died of sickness before deployment in a theatre of war. Seaford was used as a training camp for the men from the West Indies in preparation for fighting in Europe. Withnoe camp, Whitsand Bay, Plymouth was also an arrival camp. The new arrivals were inadequately clothed for the harsh realities of the British cold in winter and the huts badly insulated. As a result the camps became rife with diseases and men lost their lives totally unnecessarily // Plus Candidates for the In From the Cold Project (1) found during the course of my research using the IWM Lives of the First World War archive, who qualify for commemoration provided they died within the dates for the First World War - 4th August 1914 to 31st August 1921. There is hopefully sufficient information to get these men remembered by headstones or being added to memorials across the Caribbean // incomplete
