270 Company Machine Gun Corps was formed in Quetta in December 1917 as part of the 4th (Quetta) Division of the Indian Army. The Division contained both Indian and British units. Quetta, now in Pakistan but then on the North-West Frontier of India near the Afghan border, was an important military base. The main access was by railway - the alternative was camels across the desert. The Quetta Division had 2 MCG companies:- 261 from June to December 1917, then 270 Coy from December 1917 onwards. In 1919 the Third Afghan War broke out. Most of the fighting was further north around the Khyber pass, but, as Quetta was near the Afghan border and on the road from Kandahar, the second city of Afghanistan, into India, it was decided to make a preventative strike on the fort at Spin Baldek, just inside Afghanistan. 270 coy MGC formed part of the attacking troops. No medals were issued for this campaign, but men who took part in this action could claim the appropriate clasp to go with the Indian General Service medal, available to those who were there - the medal had to be claimed, it was not issued automatically. These are a few of the men who served in that company.
