The Descendants of James and Eliza Whitman
Nine of the men from the Little Gaddesden area who served in the First World War were grandsons of James and Eliza Whitman of Hudnall and later of 14 Ringshall, whose son Joseph also served and whose granddaughter Hilda Ellen Whitman was a Staff Nurse in Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve. Two grandsons, Arthur Whitman and George Hoar, both 1st Hertfordshire Regiment, were killed the same day, 31st July 1917, at St Julien and a third, Samuel Oakins, died at Ypres on 11th November 1917.
