The Whittlesford Society: Staff and Patients at the Whittlesford VAD Hospitals during World War One

The IWM Lives (Whittlesford Society) Community 7007: ‘The Whittlesford 100’ & the Impact on the Village of World War One' documents the lives of the recognised 100 men & boys who left the village to join the armed services, together with an ‘A’ list (Additionals, Associated, Absent Voter List) of others who could equally have qualified to be included (e.g. siblings who’d enlisted elsewhere or those already ’Regulars’). This, and the reference book compiled by Karen Wright covers what is known of the ‘Men of Whittlesford at War’, away from Whittlesford during WW1. The book on the project overall by Meg Holland and Suzanne Ridley is planned to mark the centenary of the Dinner in their Honour and inauguration of the village War Memorial in January 1920. This will focus on life in Whittlesford and the people living here immediately before, during and soon after the 1914-1919 period. Most poignantly and practically, this meant the impact of the VAD HOSPITALS established here for almost 4 years – ‘home’, however briefly, for a total of 1700 wounded strangers; service men and boys, just like the far away, 100+ local loved ones. Suzanne Ridley, who researched press references to Whittlesford between 1910-1920 plus the Red Cross Archives, is recording details of the staff and local volunteer helpers plus patients or anyone whose history includes reference to the three VAD hospital locations - at ‘Whittlesford Lodge’ (the manor house) in North Road; at ‘The Working Men’s Institute’ near the west end of High Street; and at ’Orient House’ at the other end of High Street, abutting ‘The Wagon & Horses’ (later to become the renowned ‘Tickell Arms’) and the old village green, overlooking ‘The Guildhall’ or the village shop. This Community documents references to Staff and Patients at these three Whittlesford locations during World War One, and other Life Stories or details will be especially welcome as official detailed patient records are sparse, co-incidental or unavailable.
