Lives of the First World War

Alice Elizabeth Rosher was born in Hadleigh, Suffolk in 1856. She had 11 children and married twice, first to William Lane Walker, then to Charles Beecher. By 1902 she had been widowed for the second time. She lived in Windmill Road, Gillingham Kent and died in September 1917 aged 61years old in Chatham, Kent. She did not know that those in her family on Active Service in WW1, had survived to return home. All 9 of her adult children either joined The Armed Services, or were married to Servicemen. Her 3 Sons and 3 Son in laws are remembered in this Community. The remaining 3 (2 sons and 1 son in law) were in Military Service either before or after WW1. They are as follows: William Lane Walker (junior), R.N. (served before WW1). Alice Maud Walker married Frederick Renny, Royal Marine Artillery. Edward Henry Walker R.E. Kate Walker married Wilfred John Sands R.E. Arthur Bertram Walker R.N. Charles Henry Beecher R.E. Signals Troop. Constance Mary Beecher married Maurice Victor Parsons R.E. Railway Operating Troops. Herbert Alfred Beecher R.E. (served after WW1). Blanche Emily Beecher married James Hawkesworth, Royal Artillery (served after WW1). Her family were all connected to Chatham and Portsmouth. The branches of the Armed Forces in which they served (Royal Navy, Royal Engineers, Royal Marine Artillery and Royal Artillery) may have influenced their survival.
