The Foster Brothers of Sidcup, Kent

Ernest William and Herbert Claude, sons of Ernest John and Ellen Rose Foster. Herbert, the younger brother and aged only 13 at the outbreak of war, was keen to join the army as soon as he could. He volunteered as a despatch rider and, in January 1915 was allowed to join the RFA as a Boy Trumpeter. He loved the work and won many certificates, but was taken ill at home on 18th October 1916, sent to hospital and died next day of a brain haemorrhage. He was buried with full military honours. Ernest was called up, aged 18, in March 1918. He was engaged entirely in home service and survived the war.
