Comprised of men who were transferred from the existing Volunteer Batteries in India including those of Madras, Calcutta and Rangoon. These men may also be listed in the second edition of C.T Robbie’s “The Anglo-Indian Force”. The original edition ( such as the copy in the Delhi Archives, India ) only covers the Anglo-Indian Force . The copy currently in the India Office Archives ( British Library, London) L/MIL/17/5/4318. Contains a large second part comprising the names Robbie collected from schools, colleges, instituions, places of employment etc. of members of the Anglo-Indian and Domiciled European communities that served during WW1, but did so outside of the Anglo-Indian Force Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry. This volume is available to examine and print from as microfilm IOR NEG 50256. The Indian Volunteer Artillery Battery sailed in July 1915 from Bombay to Mesopotamia. The VAB was made up of volunteers from Calcutta, Madras and Rangoon units. As part of the 6th Indian Division, they were part of the advance under General Townshend through 1915 that ended in the siege at Kut-El-Amara. The VAB fought a particularly important action in defence of Kut under siege on 25/12/15 and were a key element in preventing the Turks storming the town. However the tide turned and the garrison was forced to surrender 29/4/16. By this stage the Garrison had lost about 1800 men killed or died of disease. Another 1400 wounded were hospitalised. In captivity Of 63 members of the Volunteer Artillery Battery present in Kut at the start of the siege, 8 died during the seige and 18 died as PoWs ...”
