Birth certificateAlbert was born in Wrexham when his father was serving in the Royal Welch Fusiliers.

Workhouse record 1883Albert was admitted to the Cowley workhouse, Oxford, after his father died of TB in December 1882. His mother, who was pregnant at the time was also admitted, as was Albert's sister Celia who was 4 1/2 years old.Contributed by:

Census 1891In the 1891 census, Albert was a pupil in the Cowley Industrial school, as was his sister Celia. Their mother had died in 1884 and their sister Leah, who was born in the workhouse, died of measles in 1885.Contributed by:

Census 1901Albert was apprenticed into the army on 6 May 1893, aged 13, and by the 1901 census he was in the military prison at Guston, Kent.Contributed by:

1881 censusIn 1881 Albert was living at Wyatt's Yard, St Aldates, Oxford after his father George had been discharged from the army after 22 years service. Albert's older sister Leah died in June 1881, aged 8, of convulsions and spinal curvature. George was working as a labourer and died in 1884. Albert, his mother and his remaining sister, Celia, all entered the Cowley Road workhouse.Contributed by:
