Title: Military Cross Citation

Description: AWARDED THE MILITARY CROSS. T./Capt. John Aylmer, attd. R. Fus. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the brigade withdrawal. All the battalions had gone except about 200 men of mixed units, when information was received that the position was to be maintained. For two hours the fire was held in the hope of reinforcements arriving, until the survivors were reduced to less than 40. His company was then exposed to terrific machine-gun fire in enfilade. Again and again he rallied the men, and even when shot through the knee, refused to be taken down until he received orders to withdraw. His courage and most indomitable s'pirit were beyond praise.
