Additional: My grandfather, on the other hand seems to have led a charmed life and survived the full length of the War and even when it was over, volunteered to go over and fight in Russia, but was refused as he was nearly 40 by then.I used to wonder what sort of man he was, as he seemed to have none of the memories about war being Hell. Mostly, he seemed to have enjoyed the sense of comradeship and adventure. Looking at him as a portly, but dapper old man of 84, with chronic indigestion, it was hard to imagine him as a tough Sergeant Major, crawling about in No Man's Land with a sub-machine gunHis first stroke of luck occurred early on in the War, when he was due to catch a train with his regiment, somewhere in the North of France. His group arrived at the station early and when the train arrived they had time to choose the best compartment in the middle. But officers came and moved them and minutes later that part of the train was blown up.
