Hampshire Chronicle Casualties Report March 1917

A report in the Hampshire Chronicle, a local newspaper based in Winchester, dated March 24th 1917, incorrectly reporting the death of Frank Victor Gilmour. Frank survived the War and died in December 1992 aged 96. The report also mentions his four older soldier brothers: George, Rifle Brigade; Arthur, Rifle Brigade (died 1903 in India); William, Royal Garrison Artillery; and Walter, Hampshire Regiment, killed 1916 in Mesopotamia.

Frank is referring here to his brother Walter Ernest #4/2924 who was with him in Mesopotamia. Walter and Evelyn were engaged. Frank also mentions he is surprised that Bill has joined up - Bill is another brother, William J Gilmour #66677.

Walter Gilmour's Final Postcard

Walter Gilmour's final postcard dated Sunday Jan 15 1916. He died of wounds nine days later after Battle of Hanna. It is addressed to his fiancé Miss E Rogers in Winchester, and has these few words :- "Alls well. Please tell Ethel & 36. Uncle, Myself and Frank". 'Uncle' is probably Walter Watmore #306489, Frank (who has signed in his own hand) is Walter's brother Frank Victor #201116. '36' is his and Frank's family home, 36 Hyde Abbey Road Winchester. On the day he wrote this card the conditions were very bad, to quote from Captain Robert Palmer's letters ""Sunday. At 5.30 we stood to arms. It rained harder than ever and most of us hadn't a dry stitch. At last it got light, the rain gradually stopped, and a thoroughly depressed battalion breakfasted in a grey mist, expecting to be bombarded the moment it lifted."

There is an official stamp on the image, only partially visible, which includes a date and the words "West Hill" which was the location in Winchester of the Hampshire Constabulary HQ. Frank Gilmour Note About His Medals

Image of a handwritten note by my grandfather (Frank Victor Gilmour #201116) which mentions that one of the cap badges he had belonged to a Sgt Offer. Cecil Henry Offer #1686 came from Winchester, was in the 1/4th Hampshire's like Frank (and his brother Walter), and that battalion was in the Battle of Hanna in Mesopotamia on 21st January 1916, the date Cecil Offer was killed.

Image showing front page of Frank Gilmour's Retirement card, with the inside inscription added to the image. Inside are the signatures of police and civilian staff. It marks his retirement from full time duties as gardener at Hampshire Constabulary Police Headquarters, West Hill, Winchester, in April 1962. Frank continued with part time duties up until 1978 then aged 82, having started as gardener to the Chief Constable of Hampshire in 1932. A total of 46 years.

Photograph of Frank Gilmour taken at the Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley, Hampshire, in 1980, on the site of the Royal Victoria Hospital. Frank was a patient at the hospital in 1919 on his return from active service in Mesopotamia, he contracted Cerebral Malaria in Persia in 1918 just as the war ended, and lost his voice. He told me he used to sit on the end of the pier thinking, and I got the impression he was trying to say that he was contemplating his future. He had to learn to talk again and for the rest if his life his speech was different..

2/4th Hampshire's Leave Quetta October 1915 image2

The inside of the booklet, handwritten on the left hand page by Frank Gilmour says "Left Quetta North West Frontier India Oct. 1915 for Basra P.G. 250 volunteers. Not many came back". The right hand page shows Frank sent this to all at number 19.

2/4th Hampshire's Leave Quetta October 1915 image1

Inside of booklet contains photograph of 2/4th Battalion Hampshire Regiment on parade ready for departure from Quetta, India, for Basra, Persian Gulf (Mesopotamia). Frank Gilmour was one of 250 volunteers sent from Quetta to Mesopotamia in October 1915 to reinforce the 1/4th Hampshire's which had been depleted through casualties and illness. Frank would be joining his brother Walter who was already with 1/4th Hants having volunteered in August 1915 and joined from the 2/7th which had been in Secunderabad, India.

Greetings IEFD 1915-16

Image of small pamphlet measuring approximately 2 inches by 3 inches, this shows the front and back covers, on the front it says "Greetings 1915-16" underneath an ink drawing of a soldier in khaki drill with rifle at arms. The rear cover has an ink drawing with a coat of arms between two date palms with a scroll underneath saying 'I. E. F. "D" plus a thermometer showing max temperature 130 degrees '.

Frank just married 1924

Frank on his wedding day sat on bench outside greenhouse attached to Uplands House, Romsey Road Winchester, 19th July 1924. Frank's older brother Bill (William) Service #66677 was gardener there, Frank may have assisted too. This greenhouse and bench can be seen in the view of Uplands taken in 1915 when it was used as a Section Hospital.

Photograph of WW2 4 Commando Francis Sydney Patey (Frank) and Frank Gilmour with his wife Alice and children Brenda and Brian taken in the front garden of 173 Stanmore Lane, Winchester. Frank was billeted with Frank Gilmour's family whilst 4 Commando were quartered in Winchester and the surrounding area from December 1942 to April/May 1943.

Taken after Sunday lunch at his daughter's house, Stanmore, Winchester, in 1978, Frank acting the fool. Wearing one of his many hats, which he'd choose from the pegs in his hall way, moving his arm left and right along the rack, till he decided which deserved an outing that day.
