Lives of the First World War

Brig.-Gen. Lord Esmâe Charles Gordon-Lennox was born on 10 February 1875. He married, firstly, Hon. Hermione Frances Caroline Fellowes, daughter of William Henry Fellowes, 2nd Baron de Ramsey of Ramsey Abbey and Lady Rosamond Jane Frances Spencer-Churchill, on 8 June 1909. He and Hon. Hermione Frances Caroline Fellowes were divorced in 1923. He married, secondly, Rosamond Lorys Palmer, daughter of Vice-Admiral Norman Craig Palmer, on 2 December 1923. He died on 4 May 1949 at age 74. He was the son of Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, 7th Duke of Richmond and Amy Mary Ricardo and was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1902 and in the South Nigeria Campaign between 1903 and 1904. He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Scots Guards. He was wounded twice in the First World War, where he was mentioned in desptaches. He was awarded the DSO in 1918

This picture was taken in 1902 to commemorate the safe return from the South Africa War of members of the Gordon Lennox family. The picture shows, seated, the 6th Duke of Richmond and Gordon with his three grandsons (from left) Lord Settrington (who eventually became the 8th Duke), then a Captain in the Irish Guards; (Lord) Esme Charles Gordon Lennox, then a Lieutenant in the Scots Guards and (Lord) Bernard Charles Gordon Lennox, then a Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. All three are wearing the South African Medal and Lord Settrington is also wearing the D.S.O.
