Hector Maclennan GuthrieThe second son of James Guthrie, a draper, and Bella Guthrie (nee Murray). Born in Portsoy on 11 July 1892 and subsequently living in Roseacre Street, he was educated at Fordyce Academy and received an Honours Degree (1st) in English from Aberdeen University in July 1914. A sergeant in ‘U’ Company of the 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, he proceeded to Bedford for service with the Battalion in August 1914 and subsequently applied for and obtained a commission in the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers in October 1914. He arrived in the Dardanelles in May 1915 on attachment to the 1st Bn when he assisted in taking out a draft and was reported wounded and missing after an attack on Turkish trenches during the Third Battle of Krithia on 4 June 1915 aged 22. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. “Thus were cut off a character of uncompromising honour and an intellect of exceptional keenness…Though he died "unknown to fame," those who knew Guthrie in
