Lives of the First World War

John Lee Hall was born on the 4th May 1897 at no 1 Lock View, Bingley in West Yorkshire, the son of Thomas Lee Hall a Jeweller and Jane Hall late Jane Craven and formerly Jane Wild.

John Lee Hall died from Chronic Myelogenous Leukemiaon on 24th January 1966 at Grasmere, Grange Road, Faldingworth, Lincolnshire. His ilness was attributed to exposure to poison gas during the Great War.

Following the outbreak of the Great War on 5th August 1914, John Lee Hall enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry on 7th September 1914. Soldier number 25499 of the 12th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He served in France from 30th August 1915. The Great War ended on 11th November 1918. Lance Corporal Hall was demobilised at York on 13th February 1919 after 4 years and 6 months of war service.

Lance Corporal John Lee Hall, 25499, enlisted 7th September 1914, was discharged from the Durham Light Infantry on 13th February 1918 in consequence of demobilisation at the end of the Great War, following 4 years and 6 months of war service.

Collectively these three medals became popularly known as “Pip, Squeak and Wilfred” after comic strip characters in the Daily Mirror newspaper - Pip the dog, Squeak the Penguin and Wilfred the Rabbit.
