Title: Barclays Bank Active Service Register

Description: A register of Barclays staff on active service, arranged by local head office district. For each man it gives his branch/section at Barclays, whether married or single, the unit in which he was serving, his rank, salary, and a note if killed in action. Earlier entries contain full detail, whereas later entries often include just name. The data on the men’s salaries shows their normal bank salary, their Army pay, and how the bank made up the difference (and of course guaranteed their jobs for them). Title: Detail Page from Barclays Bank Book of Remembrance

Description: After WW2 it was decided that the permanent official Barclays Bank memorial should be an illuminated inscribed book of remembrance, one for each war. Originally put on display in a purpose-built wall case at 54 Lombard Street, the books were then put on display in the new head office building in the 1990s, and when the head office moved in 2005 to 1 Churchill Place, Canary Wharf, the books were put on display in cases there. The WW1 book lists members of staff who lost their lives serving in the armed forces, separated into Barclays Bank, London and South Western Bank, and London and Provincial Bank. The book has parchment pages, with leather binding, engrossed, decorated and gilded by Dorothy Hutton, and bound by Sydney M Cockerell, and includes illustrations of head offices and coats of arms of the three banks. The image shows the page of the WW1 book which features this person’s name as an employee of Barclays Bank Limited.

Title: Barclays Bank published list of Casualties - 1919

Description: Annotated roll published by Barclays in January 1919. The printed list is headed "Barclays Bank Limited. List of Local Directors and Members of the Staff killed in action, or who have died whilst serving with His Majesty's Forces. 1914-1918.". The hand-written annotations date between 1919 & 1924, and it looks as though they were writing to branches, local head offices and families to obtain details about the men who died. The printed information consists of name, rank, regiment, and bank branch. Written by each name is date of death, and a code indicating whether the person had originally been employed by one of the companies that Barclays had acquired during the war years – i.e., United Counties Bank, London & Provincial Bank Ltd, and London & South Western Bank.
