My grandfather George Higgs who was a PTI in the RFA and served in France from October 1917 until he was seriously wounded in March 1918.

With his wife Florence and son Jack.

On back of card to his sister Rose in Emscote,Warwick, His address Gnr G Higgs,1026 3/4 Sth Mid How Battery,RFA Camp,Churn,Didcot,Berks Dear Rose,Just a card to let you know I.m in the best of health and getting plenty of good food.We rought it a bit the first few days. the photo is one we had taken at Coventry.There is no (h)edges within 2 miles this place is a wilderness you can only see two houses on the skyline but we are having plenty of rain down here.Hope you in the best of health from your brother George

My grandad wrote upwards of 40 letters to my gran in Coventry whilst he was on active service in France between October 1917 and March 1918 when he was seriously injured by shell fire.They are still legible and in my possession.

The dreaded telegram sent to my gran 'Regret to inform you 840692 Cpl G. Higgs is seriously ill in 12 General Hospital Rouen France permission to visit cannot be granted.Artillery Records.

Dear Mrs Higgs,I am sorry to let you know that your husband Cpl.G. Higgs No 840692 is a patient in this hospital. He is dangerously ill due to multiple shell wounds.The doctors are doing all they possibly can for his comfort and the chaplain sees him daily.I hope you will write him soon.He is in Hut 3.Yours very truly,Marie Taylor,Asst.chief nurse.
