Title: Birmingham Mail 14 February 1917

Description: Mr John Adams, head master of the Birmingham City Road School, and secretary of the Athletic Institute has received a letter from the War Office stating that no further report has been received concerning his only son, Lieutenant Ralph Adams, M,C,, Royal Warwickshire Regiment who was reported wounded and missing July 1 1916. Consequently, in view of the lapse of time, the War office are now regretfully constrained to conclude that he died on or since that date and they add an expression of sympathy with Mr Adams in his bereavement.

Title: Birmingham Daily Post 14 February 1917

Description: ..KES, New St ...a member of the Bham Uni O.T.C. four years, and made a special study of army scouting. On the outbreak of of war he was gazetted to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as second Lieutenant as and accompanied his battalion to the front in March 1915. He saw continuous fighting until and including the big push on July 1 last year, when he was reported wounded and missing. He was last seen leading his men into the enemy trenches. In June 1915, he was promoted lieutenant, and was mentioned in dispatches by Lord French in December. A month later, in January 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross, and in September last after he was reported wounded and missing, a bar to the cross was awarded him for "conspicuous gallantry in leading a raid on the enemy trenches during the night of March 22 and 23. Under close fire he cut the enemies wire with torpedoes. He then bombed his way along the enemys trench, killing three of the enemy himself, and held a barricade till reinforced.

Description: Sports Argus 30 September 1916 ... his body is lying in No Man's Land about a hundred yards further on than that of Colonel Innes,,,quotation from the letter of a brother officer: ...I believe that it would be impossible for there to exist between man a greater admiration and affection than I had for Ralph... No matter how desperate and depressing was the situation he was always cheerful, and his personality enthused and inspired everyone who came in contact with him. He ought to have a V.C. for his coolness and bravery on the occasion of the raid on 22 March when, the fuse having failed to ignite, he calmly lighted the torpedo (which had been placed under the German wire) with an ordinary cigarette lighter! I shall always feel it a great honor to have been his friend, Though my grief at his loss is intense, my pride at having been his friend is greater.
