  • 1939 Register showing Samuel's Birth Date.
    The 1939 Register for England and Wales shows Samuel and Annie Hurst living at 106 Parkdale Road, Nottingham with their daughter Winifred and her husband Ross Marden. It shows Samuel to have been born on the 10th June 1870.

  • Silver War Badge.
    The Silver War Badge was awarded to Samuel nine days after his discharge on medical grounds from his unit while he was on active duty ion France. It gives a lot of information including the date he enlisted as being the 10th October 1914. This is shown to be in the 23rd Royal Fusiliers as Private 791 Samuel George Hurst. It also shows that he was discharged under the K.R. Regulations P 392, XV1 as sick. He was recorded as aged 47.

  • Medal Rolls Index Card
    The card shows that Samuel was in the 23rd Royal Fusiliers as Private 791 Samuel G Hurst also known as the Sportsmen Battalion. It also shows that he entered the Theatre of War in France on the 16th November 1915 and was awarded the Victory, British War and 1914/15 Star medals as well as the Silver War Badge. His date of discharge is recorded as the 1st January 1918.

  • Samuel George Hurst with his daughter Winifred.
    On the 10th November 1914 Samuel enlisted in the newly formed 23rd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. This photo of him in his new uniform is from a family collection and can be dated by the fact that his daughter Winifred who is sitting on his knees looks about 4 years old and was born in 1910.

    The 1871 Census Return shows ten month old Samuel G Hurst living at his parents home at 12 Neckinger Street, Bermondsey, Southwark, London. His parents were 37 year old Margate born father labourer Henry C Hurst and 25 year old Gravesend born mother Millicent N Hurst. He had three older sisters Millicent aged 12, Alice aged 8 and Louise aged 3. There were two older brothers Henry aged 10 an errand boy and 5 year old William.

    The 1881 census return shows Samuel aged 10 living at the same address 12 Neckinger Street, Bermondsey with his parents but now with nine siblings and 2 year old Millicent, granddaughter of his parents. His father Henry is now employed as a Lighterman Watchman. His younger siblings are 3 sisters, 8 year old Mary, 2 year old Edith and 5 month old Ada. There is 1 younger brother 4 year old Jas.

  • 1891 Census Return for England.
    By 1891 at 22 years of age the census return shows that Samuel had moved to the south coast and was living as a boarder with a parchment makers family in West Street, Havant, Hampshire. His job was a Sheep Skin Frizer which was the removal of the flesh attached to the skins to be processed into Chamois Leather.

  • 1881 and 1891 Census Return for England.
    The 2 census returns show where Annie Taylor was living. In 1881 at the age of 12 she was living at 16 Selbourne Road, Havant with her father 41 year old Samuel Taylor a Parchment Maker, her mother Anne, her 10 year old sister Elizabeth Taylor and 26 year old Soldier William Taylor, Samuel's younger brother. The 1891 census shows that 22 year old Annie Taylor was living in West Street, Havant as a servant to an Officer of the Inland Revenue and his wife.

    The marriage certificate for Samuel George Hurst and Annie Elizabeth Taylor that took place on the 7th November 1892 at the All Saints Parish Church, Portsea. They both lived in Staunton Street and as 24 years old. Henry's father Henry Hurst was recorded as being a Seaman.

    One of a few photos taken of Samuel, his two sons Henry and Charles, his wife Annie and Henry's fiancé. Looking at them and knowing that Samuel was in the Rest camps with his Battalion for the whole of December 1916, he and his two sons must have been on leave together from the war in France and so this was when the photos were taken.

    The image explains in text the two photographs. Sometime after the Armistice probably in December 1918 Samuel and Mary Hurst visited the grave at Nieppe Communal Cemetery in France to visit the grave of their son Charles Martin Hurst who was killed in action near Bailleul on the 16th April 1918.

    The ariel photo and text shows the Brockhampton Hamlet in Havant that figured a lot in Samuel's life from when he first moved to Havant when he left his parents home in Nottingham. After the war he and Annie visited her sisters Ellen and Elizabeth while they were still living there on many occasions over the years.

    Samuel George Hurst died at the age of 84 at Nottingham City Hospital North from Coronary Insufficiency, Chronic Nephritis and Senility. His daughter Winifred Murden registered his death. He was recorded as being a retired postman living at 106 Parkdale Road.
