Grave of Brig-Gen Husey at Vendresse Cemetery

Husey was mortally wounded in the defence of Gernicourt on May 27th 1918. After his capture he was taken to Le Thour, where he died on May 30th.

German cross over Husey's grave at Le Thour

Husey died of wounds on May 30th 1918. This cross, "to an unknown English General, presumably of the 8th Division", was erected near the field hospital. In 1919, Ernst Schewer of Wiesbaden contacted the British Army of Occupation, furnishing particulars of the unidentified General, including details of a tattoo and a shot-off finger. Schewer reported a serious head wound on Husey, apparently caused by a blow from a rifle butt. This information enabled the grave to be identified, and a named headstone to be erected when the body was transferred to the Vendresse Cemetery.

Brig Gen Husey

Husey's portrait (by Swaine of New Bond Street, London) shows him as a Lieutenant Colonel in the London Rifle Brigade, and was probably taken just before his return to the front in November 1917.

This portrait (by Wilfred Jenkin of 116 Cromwell Road, London SW) shows Husey as a Captain in the London Rifle Brigade, before his award of the Military Cross in late 1915. Husey had been promoted to Captain in 1912.
