Additional: This is a certified copy of his birth certificate, which states that he was born 2 June 1887. Note: the 1891 and 1901 census records I have linked to his record on this site, give his year of birth as 1888, but this is clearly a mistake (perhaps a transcription error?) : this birth certificate (and the evidence of his middle name) are unequivocal.

Additional: On this 1911 census return his birth year is out by 1, and his middle initial is given as G instead of J. But his trade (grocer's assistant) is consistent with the 1901 census, the birthplace (Lavenham) is right, and we know he was living in Enfield when he enlisted in 1915. There is no other remotely plausible match in the 1911 census.
