Lives of the First World War

The Roll of Honour, which hangs in St Peter & St Paul's Church, Little Gaddesden and lists 119 names of those from Little Gaddesden, Ringshall and Hudnall who served in the 1914 – 1918 War. Men who have answered their country’s call in defence of a “Scrap of Paper”. Lewis’ entry reads: HING, Lewis, R.A.S.C. (M.T.)

The CWGC headstone of Lewis' son Lance Bombardier Leonard Hing, who died of wounds 23rd September 1944 aged 24 and is buried in the Old Churchyard, St Peter and St Paul Little Gaddesden. The inscription reads "1142066 L.Bdr/ L.H. Hing/ Royal Artillery/ 23rd September 1944 aged 24/ Peace perfect peace/ With loved ones far away?/ In Jesus keeping/ We are safe and they."

A 2017 photo which shows Nos. 15, 16 and, nearest camera, 17 Little Gaddesden. Lewis and Annie Hing are recorded living at No 17 in 1921; they were still there at the time of Lewis' death in 1954.

The memorial, dedicated in 1921 and updated after the Second World War, is located close to the northern end of the village green. The left hand panel bears the inscription “In honour/ of the/ men and women/ who went from the / villages of/ Little Gaddesden/ Hudnall/ and Ringshall/ and served in the/ wars of/ 1914=1919 and 1939=1945/ the/ names of those/ who gave their lives/ for their country/ are cut/ on the stones here/ 1939=1945” below which are the names of the 6 men who fell during the Second World War. Leonard Hing’s entry reads: “Leonard Hing. Royal Artillery”.
