Photo of Joseph as a young man (seated)Joseph as a teenager before the war Date unknown, possibly 1914 Joseph was 18 in 1915 and approaching the age for conscription. Preferring to choose the regiment he joined, he and his brother-in-law Albert Fern joined a new regiment being raised in the Bolton area which became 1/5 Loyal North Lancs regiment, and formed part of the 55th Division. He completed training in England and France in late 1915 and was in a front line trench on the Somme by his 19th birthday the following January.Contributed by:

Photo of female impersonatorPte J Wright of 1/5 Loyal North Lancs Female impersonator and mezzo-soprano 55th Division theatre Photo kept as souvenir by Joseph from the Rest Camp The soldiers were kept busy while resting with organised sports and home made entertainment, including a Divisional Horse Show and a theatrical performance. A surviving programme for this suggests that costumes were hired from Angels in London and sent out to Belgium, and this photo suggests that this may not have been a wry joke.Contributed by:
