Portrait photograph of Ernest Richard Leary2 Lieutenant Ernest Richard Leary York and Lancaster Regiment (attached 3 Battalion, Machine Gun Corps) Lt Leary was born and educated in Palmerston North, New Zealand. On the outbreak of war in 1914, he enlisted with the New Zealand forces and, as a corporal, was posted with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to occupy Samoa. After six months, Lt Leary was given a commission but, finding the waiting list for officers of the NZEF very long, he travelled to England and obtained a commission in the Special Reserve of the York and Lancaster Regiment. As a specialist machine gunner, he was then attached to the Machine Gun Corps on the Western Front. Lt Leary died of wounds, aged 21, received on 23 July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.
