Title: International Red Cross POW Index Card for William

Description: From the website grandeguerre.icrc.org (site of the international red cross relating to 1WW. This is the index card created by the Red Cross in Switzerland after they were notified by Germany that William Emmett was being held as a POW. The code PA indicates he was a British prisoner held by the Germans and the two numbers against PA indicate that the Red Cross has received two documents from Germany listing the prisoner. 13886 was his British army number.

Description: He is listed sixth from bottom of this page taken from a long list of prisoners of war captured by the Germans. The list was forwarded to the International Red Cross in Switzerland, and it can be viewed on their website grandguerre.icrc.org This is document PA 5634 listed on the Red Cross individual index card for William. The register records his name; rank L/C (L/Cpl); unit (1 Duke Corn L I);where & when captured (Delville 23/7/16); his home location (Essex). It suggest that he arrived at Cambrai France on 2 August 1916 (then a German occupied town) The date stamp 12 Aug 1916 suggeststhat is the date he is leaving Cambrai for Dulmen (SW of Munster Germany)

Title: POW German Register PA6681

Description: This is a very long list in book form of prisoners notified to the International Red Cross in Switzerland by the German authorities. It can be viewed on the icrc.otg website where it is identified as document PA 6681. William is the 8th person from the top of this page. Rubber stamps in the opening title pages of the document suggest it relates to Stendal camp which was for lower ranks. Two columns in mid-line containing the word Nein/no indicate that he was not wounded.
