Description: Joseph died on 14 April 1917 and is buried at St. Leger British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, Grave C.23.

Additional: Article from the Wakefield Express Newspaper, April 28th 1917."Report from Pvt F Burgon of Outwood who states that Joe was quite merry the night before he died. 'We were talking together about half past eleven, then we laid down together. I did not even feel him move and he must have died in his sleep. I had been outside to see about breakfast when they called out to me. We saw him safely put away the same day (14th). I have lost a good pal and he was liked by all who knew him'. He joined the colours in September 1914 and went to France in January 1917. Previous to the war he worked at Walton Pit. He leaves a widow and four children."Joseph's name was listed on the War Memorial at St Catherine's Church, Belle Vue, Wakefield. The church burnt to the ground in 1993 and the memorial stone broken beyond repair.
