Title: Blog of John Dilley, 17 August 2015

Description: The August 17, 1915, edition of the Market Harborough Advertiser reports on the deaths of three soldiers who all died in peculiar circumstances. There is also news of two other Harborough soldiers being wounded in action. Private Ernest Flude of East Street has received ‘a slight wound to the left knee’. He says: “I don’t think I shall be sent to England with it. We have been having some awful times with the Germans lately. They have even tried to set fire to us in the trenches.”

Description: Page 110 ..by 9th August he was back in Blighty, hospitalised in Colchester. At about the same time Ernest Flude was also wounded in the shoulder and leg. Page 176 Ernest Flude from East Street was also lucky: We started from the hospital in France at six o’clock on Sunday morning and landed at Dover in the afternoon, started straight for Edinburgh and got there at eleven o’clock Monday morning. I expect you heard how we got cut up; it was my first time in the trenches again and we were ordered to do a bayonet charge, and we didn’t half cop it. I dropped in for a wound going across, and I was pleased I got off so lucky as I did. It’s just such another wound as I had before – in the right thigh. I can walk about. I don’t know what other Harborough chaps got hit, but I think there were a lot of them.
