James Clapperton ForbesKilled in action on 17 June 1915 aged 21, during the Battle of Hooge. His battalion, the 4th Gordons had taken over captured German trenches at Bellewaarde near Ypres on 16 June, suffering 57 casualties. The following day the battalion were in reserve in the GHQ line when the communication trenches were shelled, killing 3 (one of whom was presumably Pte Forbes) and wounding 5. With no known grave he is one of the 54,900 men commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres. Born on 23 February 1894, he was the son of William Forbes MBE (ex-Convener of the County of Banff) and Agnes Forbes of Cowhythe. He was educated at Fordyce Academy and then studied Agriculure at Aberdeen University between 1911-14. As a member of the University company (“U” Company) of the Territorial 4th Gordon Highlanders, he went on military service at the outbreak of war and crossed to France in February 1915. He is commemorated on both Portsoy and Fordyce War Memorials.
