Lives of the First World War

Sgt Harry Lovett & Emma Boys on their wedding day, 20th March 1918. I think this is the back garden of 121 Sheldon Place, Silver Street, Edmonton.

Harry in uniform on the right, I think in 1917 although I can't be sure. On the left is a friend of his in the Cameron Highlanders (based on his Cameron shoulder title). Unfortunately we have no other information about his friend, not even a name.

A great photo of Harry in his Royal Garrison Artillery uniform and insignia. He only has two chevrons here indicating this photo was taken in 1915, the year he joined up and before be was promoted to Sgt.

This is a photo of Harry Lovett standing with men of the 356th Siege Battery, that he was part of. Postcard is dated 04 June 1917. Harry was wounded by shrapnel in August/September 1917.

These notes are written in the top right hand corner of a map of Hazebrouck that belonged to Harry Lovett. The map is currently being looked after by my Mum. The notes give his name, his army number of 340869 and a reference to the 76th and 356th siege batteries. It was that reference that was the starting point for most of my research.

This is one of a pair of identical photo postcards sent by Harry from the hospital in Doncaster where he was recovering from shrapnel wounds to his back that he received we think while manning a 9.2 inch howitzer on the front. We don't have an exact date or location the injury took place. This one is dated 10th September 1917 and says: "Dearest, I hope dearie you are feeling heaps better. Am writing more fully today. Have been rather busy selling tickets for concert guests lately. Heaps of love. Harry"

This one is dated 13th September 1917 and says: "Dearest, Hope you are quite well; you weren't when you wrote that last p.c to me were you? I sent you one of these photos I believe dear, I think I sent one to Mum, if not perhaps your Ma would like it? Harry"
