McCudden Signed Report at auctionMCCUDDEN JAMES: (1895-1918) British Flying Ace of World War I, Victoria Cross winner for his flying services over France, August 1917 - March 1918. Extremely rare D.S., J. B. McCudden, Capt, one page, 4to, n.p. (France), 5th December 1917. The carbon typed document is a report of one of McCudden's aerial combats over Hermies and states, in part, 'Whilst testing new engine at 10,000 feet over Havrincourt Wood, I saw an E.A. two-seater coming W from Bourlon. I waited till E.A. got well W and attacked him....I secured a good firing position, and after firing a short burst from both guns E.A. went down in a vertical dive and broke to pieces....E.A. was of a type which I have never seen before and had an extraordinary good climb....'. Countersigned at the foot by Major Rainsford Balcombe-Brown (1895-1918) in his capacity as Commander of 56 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, confirming the victory. An excellent signed document relating directly to McCudden's 24th Aerial Victory.Contributed by:
