HMS HampshireStruck a German mine with the loss of 737 lives - including Robert MacPherson. Robert MacPherson's was one of the few recovered and only one of two that were not buried in Lyness Royal Navy Cemetery, Orkney (the other being Lt Col Oswald Arthur Gerald FitzGerald, Lord Kitchener's ADC and Personal Military Secretary).Contributed by:

Kitchener and HMS Hampshire MemorialOne of the Panels erected by Orkney Heritage Society at the recently restored Kitchener Memorial in Birsay, Orkney, Scotland. It is attached to a low arc-shaped wall, engraved with the names of all 737 men who were lost with HMS Hampshire, to “better commemorate” all those lost.Contributed by:

2/Lt R.D.MACPHERSON2/Lt R.D.MACPHERSON pictured on deck of HMS 'Iron Duke' just before boarding the drifter 'Mayberry' to be taken to HMS 'Hampshire'. Identifiable as MACPHERSON due to recognisable elements of Cameron Highlanders uniform - Glengarry and gaiters.
