When I was studying history GCSE I went on a school 'Battlefields Tour' trip to France and Belgium. This was linked to our studies about WWI. We attended the Last Post at The Menin Gate and I laid a wreath with another pupil from my school (approximate year: 2000). I was chosen because my Dad (Paul Bennett) had, through his family history research, had a certificate that proved Serjeant Edwin John Marsh was my relative and that his name was on the Menin Gate.

Edwin John Marsh had a young family when he went off to war. This is a photo of his son 'Fred' from a family collection. We know that Edwin Marsh wrote home to his family whilst he was away at war. It is dated approximately 1908-9, when Fred was about 1-2 years old.
