Title: Pte. William Allen, Northants Regiment

Description: DESBOROUGH PALS Return of “Steelback” from the Peninsula Pte William Allen, Queen St, Desborough, of the 1/4 Northants Regt,has been home on short leave. He enlisted on 14 Sep 1914 and since that time has had many exciting experiences. He was in training in England for about ten months, when on 30 July 1915, his regiment set sail on the Royal George, bound for the Dardanelles. This they reached on Sunday, 15 Aug. The landing was made under great difficulty, but nevertheless these gallant soldiers pushed on. Pte Allen served with his regiment on the Peninsula for about eight weeks and during that time many hardships were experienced on the noted Hill 60, where many of our brave lads gave their lives for their country. He left the Peninsula about 4 Oct, and was taken to a hospital in Malta, where he was found to be suffering from enteric fever. There he stayed for about a month and happily to say, gained strength enough to enable him to be conveyed to England..(edited)
